Intranets
For more than five years, I have applied my web development skills to the development of corporate intranets, helping companies use their internal networks to streamline processes, gain efficiencies and communicate information.
My most recent custom intranet was a total redesign that resulted in improved usability and navigability. The site structure was redesigned to be more logical and also was streamlined by eliminating unneeded databases and stored procedures. This intranet now features extensive administration screens that allow content owners to update the site with new information without having to go through a central web master.
The intranet also features this company's first employee self-service application: live updating of the human resource employee profile information (address, contact info, dr. info, etc.). This intranet was built using Microsoft SQL server, IIS 5.0 and Active Server Pages (ASP).
I believe that one of the principal elements for an effective website is clear and consistent navigation. The redesigned site features a consistent page header (screen shot below). The header has a decorative element on the left, the page title in the center, and the navigation on the right. The page is also personalized with the system date and time and the user's name. The user name is provided by accessing the Microsoft Active Directory.
